Winter Social Rides
Perhaps Firstly I should introduce myself, my name is Ian and I am the new boy here at the Yorkshire Cycle Hub. Although I may be the latest addition to the Fryup team I am a bit of a cycle industry old hand having been in retail for over 25 years now, I have been racing road and mountain bikes since my early teens back in the day when suspension and brakes that worked were just a dream in the MTB pioneer’s minds.
Joining the small dedicated team at the hub is a dream job for me as it is giving me a chance to pass on my love of cycling to a huge range of folk that want to experience the beauty of the North Yorkshire Moors and eat amazing cakes and drink the best coffee in the world.
One of my roles here at YCH is to expand the range of events and activities we offer that might make you want to come and use the fantastic facilities on offer. From the bunk accommodation which is great for staying overnight when planning big ride adventures or to the function rooms set up for maintenance workshops to help you feel more confident looking after your pride and joy lots of different things will be happening over the coming months.
We may be at the tail end of what has been amazing summer but that doesn’t mean we will be hanging the bikes up here on the moors! One of the priority events we recognised to get going asap was a regular social ride. With the night’s drawing in fast now we knew a night ride MTB group would be the perfect starting point.
The Hub has been opening late till 9pm on a Wednesday for a few months now and this was the perfect opportunity to get riders together for a couple of hours pedalling.
What we love about our location is how we are literally a minute away from amazing natural valley and moorland trails, been able to share our passion is such a buzz and getting riders out on our local routes really is satisfying.
So we are meeting at the Hub every other Wednesday through the winter months and aim to leave by 6.30pm… that’s the idea anyway! Routes are plotted to suit the weather and the couple of hours we have to get around and back in time for some post ride food.Absolutely anyone can join us and all we ask is you wear a helmet and follow the ride leaders’ instructions when out.No one gets left behind and the group goes as fast as the slowest riders, so don’t worry about having to go all Bear Grylls on the moor top.
Over the winter months we are meeting every other week and no matter the weather will have a ride heading out… no such thing as bad weather just poor kit choice! If you are an all year rider we will be out there with your lights burning through the dark.
We are now heading to our 4th ride and have grown from 9 riders on the 1st ride to 19 out on the last one, we may as things grow, split into two groups and have various routes and speeds out on the night.
If you are on Facebook give the ‘Yorkshire Cycle Hub’ a like and look out for the events popping up so you can add them to your calendar for reminders of our rides and other activities as we plan them.
Our next ride is October the 10th and like before we will head out from the hub at 6.30pm remember we have a Wednesday night special on in the café, if you come on the ride food is a fiver instead of the regular £8.00 so as well as a cracking ride with nice folk you get a proper feed for less than a Big Mac meal.
See you on the trails soon.
